The little history that is documented states that this herding breed was developed in the areas of Tennessee and Mississippi and traveled West with the Settlers. The Black Mouth Cur is part of the Herding Group. They are well known for their ability to "tree". They have excellent tracking and retrieving capabilities. The Black Mouth Cur is very intelligent, loyal and has a strong personality. Therefore, socialization and obedience training are a must. They are good with children if raised around kids. They are very protective of family and can be wary of strangers and unknown dogs. Exercise for this breed is important. They can quickly become bored and a bored dog is a destructive dog.
